Okay, I promised I would blog about this when I first got back from the states. I wrote it down in my journal while I was on the plane and it was fresh in my mind. So I'm just going to type out what I wrote in my journal for your reading pleasure.
11:35 am (local time - San Francisco)
3:35 am Okinawa time
I am on an airplane in San Francisco waiting to take off for Tokyo and then Okinawa. It's already been one hell of a day. I can't really complain. We're on a plane and mostly on time... Slightly delayed. Let me just tell you how much fun it is NOT to fly with young children by yourself.
On the bright side, the plane flying back to Tokyo is much more comfortable than the one we flew to the states on. We have more room since Sydney didn't come. We have an extra seat in our row. I'm not excited that she didn't come back. But I'll take advantage of more space. It will be nice if the kids fall asleep.
They've already been driving me crazy. It's so hard traveling with kids. You can't go to the bathroom without taking everything and everyone with you. The kids were just being normal kids. I can't blame them for wanting to climb and play. But I hate it when they won't listen me.
Okay, so to start out the day, we got up at 4 am. I showered last night so I just had to wet and restyle my hair. We left the house at 4:45 am. There was a lot more traffic than I thought there would be. We made it just fine. One of my bags was 8 lbs. over the weight 50 lb. limit and they would have charged me $200 for the extra weight. So I had to redistribute the weight. (a down side to this is that my mom helped me and wasn't as careful with my breakables and a bottle of fingernail polish ended up breaking and getting all over inside a cosmetic bag filled with fingernail polishes. Not too serious of a casualty considering everything.) It turned out fine because the other bags were only 35-45 pounds each. I had to leave a few things behind. I left Brynne's scooter and Zerrin's helmet. I bought a ton of clothes, though.
We got through security security just fine except I forgot my cell phone in my pocket, so I had to go through the thing twice. Our flight was delayed somewhat because of another flight ahead of us. Luckily, we had a 2 1/2 hour layover in San Francisco, so it didn't matter.
Brynne was delightful on the flight. There was even a flight attendant named Brynn. They were very sweet, even when Zerrin and Brynne both spilled their drinks all over the floor. Zerrin kept paging the flight attendant to "ask her a question", but he really just enjoyed the attention.
The fun really started in when we arrived in San Francisco. Like I said before, we had a 2. 5 hour delay. So we had to sit around and wait. The kids did okay. But they were a little obnoxious-- climbing on everything and just being kids. But then these 3 French ladies got up and moved away from us. They didn't want to be around kids. I decided to get a drink from Burger King. The kids wanted a shake. I was going to buy them each one, but they were HUGE and expensive. A small shake was 20 oz. or bigger. Since I was alone, I had to make the kids stand in line with me with all the luggage. I was trying to simplify by tying the kids' pillow pets to their back packs. But of course my little DIVA/DRAMA QUEEN had to "do it herself" and started flipping out when I tried to help her. She tried running off. I must have looked like an abusive mother when I grabbed her by her back pack and yanked her back, picking her up and and putting her in front of me. So after a fight in the line, we had a shake for the kids to share and a Coke for me. As we were walking down to the terminal, somehow, Zerrin poured some of the shake on his head! I'm like SERIOUSLY?
Then we walked about 10 more steps and Zerrin drops the shake, spilling it on the floor, which just happened to be on a down hill slope. So a big glob of vanilla ice cream started sliding down the floor, following us....
So now that my hands are full of two carry on bags, plus a coke, plus a pillow pet, Brynne decides she needs to go potty. So we go to the bathroom where Zerrin also goes potty. We get downstairs to our gate; I finally feel like I can relax for a few minutes until our flight leaves. BUT NO.... Zerrin needs to go potty AGAIN!! I have 2 heavy bags, 2 pillow pets, a Coke, and 2 kids to try and keep track of myself. And we have to go back upstairs lugging all my junk so Z can go potty again. kids finally get settled after 2 potty trips. So now I can finally relax? NOPE. Zerrin finds some kind of black "bean" on the ground and decides it would be a good idea to bite it. It spewed dark green liquid all over inside his mouth, and on his hands. Seriously! Can we do anything else to make this trip more difficult? (Who knows what the black little capsule was... it was either a cough medicine capsule, or herbal supplement of some kind... it could have been a paint ball for all I know...) But what a mess to clean up!
